Why Mbappe Will Win the Golden Boot
My pick for the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot is Kylian Mbappe of France. A big reason for this selection is the fact that I expect France to win the World Cup, which means that Mbappe will play in matches all the way up to the final if that prediction comes true. More matches should equal more goals, which should help Mbappe to get over the line.
Mbappe has already proven that he is capable of scoring on the biggest stage in the sport, the World Cup Final, which helps his case in the race for the Golden Boot. Mbappe already holds the record for the most goals in final matches with 4 after bagging a hat trick in the 2022 final loss to Argentina and scoring once against Croatia in the 2018 final. If France gets to the final again, Mbappe will be expected to score and extend his record.
We are also expecting plenty of scoring from France in the early stages of this tournament. World Cup Group I features some intriguing teams in Norway and Senegal in addition to the French. But those teams are known for their dangerous attackers and are expected to be vulnerable at the back. While Thomas Tuchel’s England squad selection has drawn plenty of justified scrutiny, Kane should still produce at the highest of levels, as he enters this tournament in arguably the best form of his career. As long as he doesn’t miss any penalties this time around, he could fire England deep into this tournament.
Then you have the veteran stars like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo who will try to grab themselves a Golden Boot. Ronaldo is particularly interesting in this race, as Portugal is a trendy pick to win the World Cup. While CR7 is playing inferior club competition in Saudi Arabia, he will be this team’s penalty taker and free kick taker, which could help him run up his goal total.
Spain has a couple of players who could also get the Golden Boot, with their depth being a big reason for their spot atop our pre-World Cup power rankings. Lamine Yamal is the young star of the Spanish squad, while Mikel Oyarzabal is also a contender that a lot of the world will be learning about for the first time at this tournament. The question will be whether Spain’s depth prevents any one individual from shining too much on their own to win the boot.
Finally, Erling Haaland is a contender given his status as one of the world’s top goal scorers for his club, Manchester City. But he isn’t playing for a team as dangerous as City at the World Cup, as Norway isn’t as deep a squad, to put it lightly. Haaland might not be a good value for his current price, as he will receive a ton of attention from opposing defenses at this World Cup.
