Atlanta Hawks
The Atlanta Hawks have decided to shake things up this season. They traded away Trae Young to the Washington Wizards in exchange for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert. That move has paid dividends for the Hawks, as they have shot to the top of the Southeast Division standings. Atlanta is a lot better defensively without Young and Jalen Johnson has led their offense like a bona fide star. Now the question is where the Hawks will land in the postseason hierarchy at the end of the regular season, as they look to close out the Southeast Division late in the regular season.
Orlando Magic
The Orlando Magic are built on toughness on the defensive end of the floor. They aren’t a great three-point shooting team, but that hasn’t stopped them from contending in this division once again. Paolo Banchero is one of the best young stars in the NBA, leading this Orlando roster. If Franz Wagner’s health is more consistent later in the season, we could see this Magic team enjoy a nice playoff run, but offensive consistency will be key if the Magic are to make any sort of postseason run.
Miami Heat
The Miami Heat are no strangers to contending for the Southeast Division title. They are firmly in contention in this division again this season, despite some injury concerns surrounding key players like Tyler Herro this year. Miami has overcome a lot of its issues by simply playing well on its home floor, while Norman Powell has emerged as one of the most underrated players in the NBA. The question will be whether or not this team can finish strong enough to win their division, as they a ton of competition in the most competitive division race in the league.
Charlotte Hornets
Things haven’t gone well for the Charlotte Hornets in recent seasons. But they have reason to be excited about the future, and they look pretty good in the present as well. Rookie Kon Knueppel is challenging Dallas’ Cooper Flagg in this year’s Rookie of the Year race in the NBA, with Knueppel’s three-point shooting becoming a major asset for Charlotte. Since the start of 2026, the Hornets have become true division title contenders in the Southeast. And while this group is still a couple of years away from contending for deep playoff runs, it at least looks like they are starting to build something decent with Knueppel and Brandon Miller in Buzz City.
Washington Wizards
The Washington Wizards are on the short list of contenders as possibly the worst teams in the NBA right now. The Wizards did bring in Trae Young, who has finally made his debut with the team, but they are still in a battle in the basement of the East and it would probably be smart for Young to not see the floor at all this season. Washington has a top-eight protected pick in the next NBA Draft, so it would behoove them to lose as much as possible in the 2025-26 season to try and draft a franchise-altering talent.
