Logan Webb’s season-long numbers (4-5, 3.35 ERA) are clearly stronger on paper than what Bryce Elder (5-5, 3.71 ERA) has shown lately, and the market has reacted accordingly by installing San Francisco as a home favorite. But our model leans the other way for a few reasons. Atlanta’s lineup still ranks among the better offensive groups in the National League. Webb is good, but he is not immune to contact, and Atlanta’s righty-heavy attack, led by Matt Olson, Ozzie Albies, Austin Riley, and Michael Harris II, gives this lineup more than one path to runs even against a quality starter.
On the other side, Elder gets a Giants lineup that has been miscast as dangerous purely off raw average. San Francisco ranks in the bottom half of the league in runs scored despite a respectable team batting average, and with Luis Arraez banged up and Heliot Ramos still working back from injury, the order loses some of its table-setting ability.
