The opening odds at legal US sportsbooks have Sascha Zverev as a heavy favorite to win this match. He hasn’t been troubled much at this tournament so far, dropping a total of two sets, including one in the semifinals against Jakub Mensik. But Zverev has looked comfortable throughout this fortnight and will be expected to finish the job to claim his first slam.
It remains to be seen if he can handle the bright lights of a major final, though. Zverev has had multiple chances in major finals before and has fallen each time, including in the US Open final against Dominic Thiem, in which he fumbled multiple chances to seal that match. Zverev is undoubtedly the better player entering this contest, but his biggest opponent might be in his own head if this match stays close throughout.

Unsurprisingly, Zverev has been dominant on serve for the most part, and the fact that he gets second serves in play more consistently now has helped him tremendously. The German is winning nearly two-thirds of his second serve points and Cobolli has to make those points as difficult as possible if he wants to generate break chances, where he’s been opportunistic throughout the tournament.
2026 French Open Final Preview
For Sascha Zverev, this Roland Garros draw worked out as well as he could have hoped for. He didn’t have to face elite players like Novak Djokovic or Taylor Fritz in his half of the draw, as they were upset before those rounds of the tournament. And to Zverev’s credit, he took full advantage of that, cruising to the final by dropping two sets in total.
Flavio Cobolli didn’t have a terribly difficult path to the final either. He dropped two sets as well, mowing down three straight North Americans to reach the final, the last of those being fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in four sets. Cobolli received a walkover into the final, as fellow Italian Matteo Arnaldi was injured and couldn’t compete in the semis.
Zverev didn’t have a terribly strenuous semifinal in his win over Mensik, but Cobolli didn’t have to play at all on semifinal Friday. It will be interesting to see if Cobolli is the fresher player because of that unexpected day without a match, or if Zverev continues bending opponents to his will regardless of the Italian’s rest advantage.
For Cobolli, the key to this match will be making Zverev uncomfortable as much as possible. We know that the big German doesn’t like playing at the net, so mixing things up and forcing Zverev there might be a tactic worth employing. As for Zverev, avoiding the yips that have impacted him at this stage in previous majors is all that separates him from finally getting his hands on a big four trophy.
In the end, I expect Zverev to win, but I also expect it to happen in typical Zverev fashion. His level will rise and fall throughout the match, with Zverev ultimately winning in five sets.
