Group analysis

Group B changed completely on Matchday 2. Canada’s 6-0 win over Qatar was their first ever men’s World Cup victory and the most emphatic performance of the group so far. Jonathan David scored a hat-trick, Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba also scored, and Qatar added an own goal. The result puts Canada top on goal difference and gives Jesse Marsch’s side a simple brief against Switzerland: avoid defeat and win the group.

The Canadian celebration was tempered by Ismael Kone’s broken leg, suffered after a second-half tackle by Assim Madibo. Kone is out for the tournament, while Alphonso Davies is still working back from a hamstring injury and is expected to be managed rather than thrown straight into the XI. Nathan Saliba is now the natural replacement in midfield after scoring from the bench against Qatar.

Switzerland also responded strongly after their opening draw with Qatar. Murat Yakin’s side beat Bosnia 4-1 with a late surge, including a Johan Manzambi brace, a Ruben Vargas goal and a Granit Xhaka penalty. The scoreline gives Switzerland a healthy goal difference but not enough to overtake Canada, so the equation is clear: they must beat the co-hosts in Vancouver to top Group B.

Bosnia and Qatar are both on 1 point and meet in Seattle in what is effectively a survival match. Bosnia are the stronger side on paper and are favoured in the market, but Tarik Muharemovic is suspended after his red card against Switzerland. Qatar are also hit by suspensions, with Homam Ahmed and Assim Madibo out after the 6-0 defeat to Canada. A draw almost certainly does neither side enough good.

Expert insight: Canada are now favourites to win Group B, but the match price still makes Switzerland slight favourites on the day. That creates a clean distinction between the group market and the 90-minute market.

ATS.io expert verdicts

MarketTop angleRationale
Group winnerCanada (-165)Canada only need a draw in Vancouver and have a +3 goal-difference cushion over Switzerland. The Kone injury matters, but the game state is still firmly in Canada’s favour.
Match pickDraw (+200)Switzerland are good enough to control spells, but Canada do not need to chase. A low-risk Canadian approach makes the stalemate a logical match angle.
Survival gameBosnia ML (-270)Bosnia have the stronger attacking pieces and Qatar are missing two suspended starters. The price is short, but the matchup still leans Bosnia.
Player angleJonathan David anytimeDavid comes off a hat-trick and remains Canada’s cleanest route to a goal if Switzerland push numbers forward late.

The sharp edge

The key is not to overreact to the 6-0 scoreline alone. Canada were excellent, but Qatar finished with nine men and were already unraveling. The more actionable angle is the final-day game state: Canada can win the group with a draw, Switzerland must win, and the home crowd is in Vancouver. That makes Canada group winner at -165 more attractive than Canada moneyline in the match market.

Top two qualify automatically. Canada win the group with a win or draw against Switzerland. Switzerland win the group if they beat Canada. Bosnia and Qatar need to win in Seattle and then rely on the third-place table, with second place only possible through a major goal-difference swing.

Best bets

Best value
Canada to win Group B
-165
Canada have the cleanest path because a draw is enough in Vancouver. The Kone injury is a blow, but the +6 goal difference and home game state make Canada the right side of the group market.
Match pick
Switzerland vs Canada draw
+200
Switzerland need to win the match, but Canada do not. Expect Marsch to protect central areas, slow the game down when possible and lean on David/Larin as outlets rather than opening up too early.
Survival pick
Bosnia to beat Qatar
-270
Bosnia have the stronger attacking spine and Qatar are missing Homam Ahmed and Assim Madibo through suspension. The price is not exciting, but the matchup leans clearly toward Bosnia.

Group B betting analysis

The group-winner market is now mostly a two-team market. Canada are priced ahead of Switzerland because they only need a draw, while Switzerland are priced shorter in the 90-minute market because they have the stronger tournament pedigree and likely more of the ball. That split is useful. Canada to win the group and Switzerland draw-no-bet are very different arguments.

Bosnia vs Qatar is more straightforward. Both teams are on 1 point, both need to win, and a draw probably kills both knockout hopes. Bosnia have the more reliable route to goals through Dzeko, Demirovic and set pieces, while Qatar’s best path is Afif creating a transition moment. Qatar’s two suspensions make the Bosnia side easier to trust.

-165 group win

Team overview

Canada produced the performance of the group by beating Qatar 6-0 in Vancouver. Jonathan David’s hat-trick changed the entire table, while Larin, Saliba and an own goal built the goal-difference cushion that now has Canada top. The concern is availability. Ismael Kone is out with a broken leg and Alphonso Davies is expected to be managed after his hamstring issue, so Saliba is the obvious midfield replacement and Davies is more likely to be a bench weapon than a guaranteed starter.

Team overview

Switzerland were frustrated by Qatar in the opener but responded with a 4-1 win over Bosnia. The late burst mattered: Manzambi scored twice from the bench, Vargas added a goal and an assist, and Xhaka converted a stoppage-time penalty. The Swiss have no listed injury or suspension problems before Canada, but they need to win in Vancouver because Canada’s goal difference keeps the co-hosts ahead if the game is drawn.

Team overview

Bosnia’s 4-1 defeat to Switzerland was harsh on the scoreline but damaging in the table. They now need to beat Qatar and hope four points is enough for either a late second-place twist or, more realistically, a third-place wildcard route. Tarik Muharemovic is suspended after the red card against Switzerland, so Stjepan Radeljic is the likely defensive replacement. Barbarez has made it clear Bosnia cannot sit back in Seattle.

Team overview

Qatar’s opening draw with Switzerland was undone by the 6-0 defeat to Canada. The scoreline was damaging, but the availability picture is just as important. Homam Ahmed and Assim Madibo are suspended after red cards, leaving Lopetegui to rebuild the left side of defence and the midfield before a must-win match against Bosnia. Akram Afif remains the main chance-creation route.
